Downton Abbey Country

“What is a weekend?” The Dowager Countess of Grantham

Tour Highlights: Downton Village including the church, the Crawley residence, the cottage hospital, The Dog and Duck Pub, Downton Fair , the village green, the post office, Mr. Bates‘s Red Lion Pub, The Swan Inn (the scene of the failed elopement) and many more instantly recognisable locations.

Highclere Castle, the house used as the Grantham family home is only open a few days each year. When it is closed to the public we would highly recommend touring some of the beautiful locations used for the TV drama.

We spend our day in the most breathtaking English countryside. The series is set in the fictional Yorkshire country estate of Downton Abbey but many of the locations are in the wonderful Oxfordshire Cotswolds. This is such a beautiful area that it was no suprise the producers chose to film some of the most memorable scenes from the series here, particularly Bampton, which doubles as the fictional village of Downton.

Our morning is largely spent in this breathtaking village. The area around the parish church of St. Mary`s may appear oddly familiar to you as this where many of the village scenes for the series were filmed and where many dramas have been played out in the streets. We visit the Crawley residence, Downton Cottage Hospital, The Grantham Arms, The Dog & Duck, Downton Fair site and of course the church.

After lunch at a wonderful country inn we then visit Mr. Bates‘s pub and then on to the scene of the planned elopement of Lady Sybil and Branson. Finally we have just enough time for some tea and a spot of souvenir shopping in lovely Burford. What a wonderful day!

As with all our tours, if our most popular tour schedules do not suit your specific requirements, please allow us to create a customised itinerary especially for you. We always remember the day is yours to cherish.
