The White Cliffs & Canterbury

the W
“The Garden of England”

Tour Highlights: White Cliffs of Dover, Dover Castle, WW2 Tunnels, Canterbury Cathedral, Canterbury city, Chilham Village, Royal Greenwich view, Leeds Castle, the wonderful Kent Countryside and beautiful hamlets.

As we travel east out of London we make our first stop at the most glorious panoramic view of London from the lookout point at The Royal Greenwich Observatory. The city really looks quite magnificent from here.

We continue our journey further south east to arrive at the iconic White Cliffs of Dover for morning coffee. We then travel through the old port of Dover to the ancient bastion, Dover Castle. Parts of this castle date to Saxon times. We tour the 12th Century ramparts and Keep before visiting the Napoleonic tunnels, home to the World War II subterranean Head Quarters that masterminded such momentous events as the evacuation of Dunkirk.

Lunch is taken at a traditional village inn before we enter the beautiful city of Canterbury. We meander along the cobbled streets to the magnificent Cathedral itself, birthplace of Christianity in England, 670 AD. We visit Thomas Becket`s tomb and pause for reflection as we discuss his murder here in 1170. We view the wonderful Black Knight`s armour and regalia from the 14th Century. There is time for shopping in historic Canterbury before we journey onto the fairy tale castle that is Leeds.

Leeds is considered the most beautiful castle in England. It is surrounded by a mysterious lake and the building itself originates from the 12th Century. Henry VIII loved the castle and was a frequent visitor as it was close to his lover, Anne Boleyn’s estate. One can easily imagine Royal courtship in the spectacular grounds at Leeds. There is time for afternoon tea before we make our way home.

If you would prefer to tour either the family estate of Anne Boleyn, Hever Castle or Churchill`s country residence at Chartwell we could tour one of these wonderful homes instead.
