"Poetry, olde England & bloody dungeons”
Tour Highlights: Shakespeare’s Stratford, birthplace, school, grave, Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, Stratford`s Tudor buildings, The Cotswold landscape , Warwick Castle, state apartments and extensive parklands.
We start our day in the beautiful town of Stratford Upon Avon, birthplace to perhaps the greatest ever writer of all time, William Shakespeare. The “sweet swan of Avon” was born and died in Stratford but spent most of his life in London, building a reputation as playwright and poet that shines even more brightly today. We visit his ancestral home and other famous Stratford sites connected to the bard, we learn of his adventures in London and his legacy to literature. We even pay homage to the great man at his final resting place. We spend some time enjoying the pretty town centre and the interesting shops for souvenirs.
Lunch is taken by the River Avon at one of the many hostelries before we make our way on to Warwick Castle, the finest medieval fortress in the land. The castle is almost 1,000 years old and our afternoon begins touring the Great Hall, State Apartments and mighty fortifications. We learn of the bitter Wars of the Roses of the 15th Century and then we brace ourselves, as we enter the infamous dungeons. Finally there is time to explore the stunning parklands before we journey homeward.
