The Battle of Britain

“Victory—victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory there is no survival.” – Winston Churchill

Tour Highlights: RAF Duxford Imperial War Aviation Museum, The American Air Exhibition, The American Cemetery and Bletchley Park.

This wonderful day gives you a real flavour of Britain during WWII and we are reminded of the supreme sacrifice our greatest ally, America, contributed to our final victory. We start our day at Britain's largest aviation museum, RAF Duxford. It houses over 200 aircraft, many military vehicles, artillery and naval vessels in seven main exhibition buildings. The site also accommodates several British Army regimental museums, including the Parachute Regiment.

In March 1943 the United States Army Air Forces' 78th Fighter Group started to arrive at Duxford with their Republic P-47 Thunderbolts. The Group reequipped with North American P-51 Mustangs in December 1944 and until the end of the war in Europe and the Group remained at Duxford carrying out bomber escort and fighter sweeps, ground strafing and ground attack missions. The American Air Exhibition at Duxford is one of the largest and most comprehensive outside the United States.

A short distance away we have plenty of time to stop at the American Cemetery to pay our respects to the fallen. The U.S. commitment to liberty and democracy brought more than 3 million Americans to the British Isles in World War II. The American Cemetery has become a symbol of a nation’s sacrifice.

Lunch is taken at a charming country inn before we make our way on to the top secret home of the WW II Nazi Enigma code breakers at Bletchley Park. We learn of the fascinating history of the invaluable work undertaken here during “our darkest hour”. Bletchley was also the birthplace of the modern computer and many of the wartime buildings are still there for us to explore.

As with all our tours, if our most popular tour schedules do not suit your specific requirements, please allow us to create a customised itinerary especially for you. We always remember the day is yours to cherish.
